Tübingen, Travel &
Accommodation

"Tübingen has no university - Tübingen is a university" is the local saying. The University of Tübingen, founded in 1477, is one of the oldest in Germany and the first to establish a facility for Natural Sciences. For more than 525 years many famous personalities have studied and taught in its precincts, including: the astronomer Johannes Kepler; Protestant theologian Ferdinand Christian Baur; Joseph Ratzinger, former Cardinal and currently Pope Benedict XVI; and Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard, the first German female Nobel Prize winner in medicine. The potential for science and research today is ideal both for the humanities and the natural sciences, particularly in the area of the Life Sciences with modern laboratories.
Tübingen itself has over a thousand years of history and sits on the Neckar River. The city has adapted warily to the modern needs by a well-balanced mixing of history, civic community and University.
The castle, old town and medieval buildings of the University offer a picturesque and historic atmosphere. In the completely intact, pedestrianised old town, Altstädte in German, you can wander through crooked cobblestone lanes and narrow-stair alleyways that picking their way through the hilly terrain, or find streets lined with canals and well-maintained traditional half-timbered houses.
